Small Wonders: The Virtual Reality Experience

, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York

In 2017, The Metropolitan Museum of Art hosted Small Wonders: Gothic Boxwood Miniatures , an exhibition featuring over 50 examples of intricate, small-scale carvings first created in the Netherlands in the 16th century for religious meditation. We partnered with the museum to present Small Wonders: The Virtual Reality Experience, allowing visitors to “shrink” to view details of carvings in fine detail.

Built for VIVEPORT, the immersive virtual reality experience was a collaboration between the Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO), the Canadian Film Center Media Lab (CFC Media Lab), and the renowned design school Seneca’s School of Creative Arts and Animation. Priam Givord was the creative and technical director.

According to the National Arts Foundation of the United States, the number of American adult museum goers has drastically decreased in the past decade, and the frequency of museum visits for millennials aged between 20 and 30 also declined sharply. We aspire to partner with museums to reverse that trend, by providing technology that changes the way they operate, curate, exhibit and communicate.
